Malmi Airfield has a decades-spanning history as an active airfield. However, as the local aviation activities are presently winding down and will stop completely by the end of 2019, this area will be totally reinvented as a modern new community. In November 2018, the master plan for Malmi Airfield took effect, meaning that a fresh wave of development can kick off in earnest.

By the 2040’s, the present-day Malmi Airfield will have been turned into a fair-sized town with about 25,000 residents and 2,000 jobs. While the eventual goal is still far away in the distance, it is good to keep in mind that for the City of Helsinki, the Malmi Airfield development is the biggest completely new undertaking for a long time to come.

The infrastructure and street network are the first to be planned and implemented, after which the first phase of residential construction could commence in 2022, at the earliest.
