World’s smartest Real Estate & Construction Campus emerging

The renewed Myllypuro metro station is the driver of the new kind of urban hub which brings together Metropolia Campus area, shopping mall, healthcare station, sports centre and also residential solutions. As the Myllypuro centre is completely revitalised in the coming years, there are plenty of opportunities for companies big and small, especially in the service industries.

The biggest change is the launch of the main campus of Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in autumn 2019. The modern campus area will be bustling with 6,000 students and 500 Metropolia employees.

Construction Cluster Emerging

Myllypuro Campus will become a high-profile cluster for real estate and construction expertise with the diverse education and training available at Metropolia. The City wants to work together with local construction industry companies to form a true ecosystem in Myllypuro. The Real Estate & Construction Campus wants to be the smartest in the world, utilising cutting-edge hi-tech and solutions.

The idea is that companies are able to have better access to quality labour and the students can find interesting internship and job opportunities. In the future, collaboration between the local businesses and Metropolia can take place in the form of e.g. workshops and lectures.

In addition to construction sector, Myllypuro Campus will be a home also to the students of social and healthcare sector. Synergies between the students and the social/health industries will be explored, too.

Synergies from Sports

In Myllypuro, there is already a strong foundation for sports and recreation. There are sports venues and outdoor activities within a walking distance from Myllypuro centre: for instance, the versatile indoor arena Liikuntamylly, floor ball hub Arena Center and Formula Center. New attractions and services could, conceivably, compliment the local offering and boost the ecosystem onwards.

Near the sports park, in Southern Myllypuro, a new type of community is being built which reflects the district’s desire for construction excellence. Puu-Myllypuro is a compact, village-like neighbourhood consisting of wooden houses (puu means ‘wood’ in Finnish). There are about 1,500 residents living here, enjoying high-quality wood construction and local nature, characterised by cliffs and rocks among the green.

In the past, Myllypuro has successfully utilised complementary construction to create a green community with a good degree of connectivity. Currently, a strong focus area is the eastern side of Ring I, where apartment buildings and small houses are constructed for over 1,600 people.

Strong Commitment from City

Also, there are new apartments by the power plant area on the eastern side of Ring I – and an interesting townhouse project underway. Townhouse living is quite rare in Finland, so this pilot has attracted its share of attention.

Furthermore, the City is committed to expanding the services in the district during 2020’s; for example, local schools are expanded and daycare centres and sports venues are renovated.
